Dixieland Jazz, early jazz or New Orleans jazz began at the start of the 20th century and was a combination of French Quadrilles Marching bands, ragtime and blues.

Well-known Dixieland songs include "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Basin Street Blues".

The traditional line-up is trumpet/cornet, trombone and clarinet, with a rhythm section of guitar or banjo, string bass or tuba, piano, and drums.
