Kate Marshall - Harpist
This Scottish harpist's music draws on a wealth of differing experiences, from work within the Gaelic and Scottish traditions to studies with Paraguayan harp master Rito Pederson. Playing both gut and wire-strung clarsachs (Scottish harp) as well as bray and Paraguayan harps, she has developed through the folk world of feisean, festivals and lessons with leading players such as Alison Kinnaird and Bill Taylor.
Her credits have included appearances at the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh International Harp Festival, commissioned pieces for Celtic Connections and others, and work as musical director of ALP's Scots Music Group Big Band.
She has taught and performed at festivals in the USA, Australia, France, Germany and Switzerland, as well as numerous home festivals and events.
She is currently clarsach tutor at The National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music at Plockton. She previously lectured in Scottish music and taught wire-strung clarsach and bray harp at the RSAMD.
She has a wide repertoire of Scottish, light classical and currently popular pieces, along with music from countries including Paraguay, Venezuela, Israel, Ireland and many others.
Light classical pieces such as Jeremiah Clarke's Chaconne, Pachelbel's Canon or Delibes' Flower Duet from Lakme are often chosen for the bridal entrance. Popular pieces requested for this or for the signing of the register include themes from films (Braveheart, Titanic), Songbird, Everything I Do, All You Need is Love, Love theme from Romeo and Juliet, Fields of Gold and Highland Cathedral.
The Scottish harp is particularly suited to the music from the courts and grand houses of centuries past, and this elegant repertoire is perfect for weddings. She usually plays a selection of material as your guests await which sets the scene for the important ceremony to come
She will always discuss repertoire with you before the day to ensure that you get what you want. She's also happy to make all the decisions for you if
you like!
