The "swing era" was at its peak in the 1930s and 1940s and consists of a strong rhythm section of double bass and drums, a brass section (trumpet, trombone, sax etc) and is usually fronted by a singer. It always has a strong rhythmic drive and is designed for dancing.
The most famous swing band leaders were Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman among others.
The original Rat Pack singers included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Junior.
