Thanks to the mentorship of Bobby Gardiner Jason has fostered a deep love and respect for Irish traditional music from a young age. His compositions take traditional rhythms and patterns as their roots, but are expanded to include influence from his classical training, aspects of other folk music traditions and modern experimental works. He has a firm belief that it is important to nurture the authenticity of the Irish traditional music experience, staying true to its origins while at the same time responding to the modern world.

Expanding the boundaries of compositional ideas for his works, he has ventured into designing responsive light arrangements. He has conceived and developed a software system which creates ad hoc light shows in immediate response to the tempos of live music; audience members can also collaboratively adjust lighting to suit the mood in real- time via the web. He is also interested in the interplay between live traditional instruments and electronic music and has developed a number of new electronic instruments including an optical midi analyser for the accordion as well as an Android based synthesizer.
