The Greek Rembetica Band - Greek Band
The Greek Rembetika Band was formed in order to present the evolution of Greek Laika music (the people’s music) from the early days of ‘Rembetika’ through to what became known as ‘Archondo Rembetika’ which later developed into Greek popular music - ‘Laika’ followed by the music of the great composers, Theodorakis, Hatzidakis, Xarchakos etc i.e. ‘Entechno’.
These composers used Rembetica musicians, singers and the musical modes of Rembetika to create their wonderful compositions so we can see a clear evolutionary path developing straight through from the roots of Rembetica that influenced what was to follow.
Many books have been written about this subject by musicologists and Rembetologists including one by Australian writer Gail Holst who visited Greece in the 1960’s and fell in love with both the country and ‘Rembetika’. It is written in English, it’s title is “Road To Rembetika” It is a very entertaining introduction to the subject as it explains the origins of the music, the main protagonists and characters, the part played by the Asia Minor refugees and Smyrna ‘Cafe Aman’ musicians, the instruments and ‘modes’.
The members of The Greek Rembetika Band believe that it is now time to perform these wonderful songs and to present and explain the evolution of this music to a wider audience.
