Swing Django - Gypsy Swing Band
Noted for the way that they maintain the swinging spirit of the great Reinhardt & Grappelli but without trying to be a carbon copy.
Firmly rooted in the Hot Club sound of the swing era, all four members of the band have a detailed acquaintance with the gypsy jazz tradition but they use this knowledge not just to recreate classics from the past, but to apply the approach to a growing book of excellent originals played with virtuoso brio by four of the finest exponents of the style,
The band were originally formed about eight years ago and recorded their first cd on the Jazz Action label and their second cd on their own label. In this guise they played at theatres, festivals, corporates and weddings all over the country with many appearances on local tv and radio.
After a brief hiatus and personnel change they have since become the North East’s most popular outfit and have continued to play clubs, theatres and festivals throughout the country.
They recently headlined and sold out the opening night of the International Guitar Festival at the Sage in Gateshead. Their third album, consists of both gypsy standards and their own compositions.
From the traditional gypsy repertoire to jazz standards, they are able to play totally acoustic or with amplification to suit whatever is needed. With the classic line up of violin, two guitars and double bass you can sure of a swinging night of gypsy music.
